Research activities
The Peritoneal Surface Malignancies (PSM) Program at the Fondazione IRCCS “Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori" of Milan (INT) has completed 20 years of experience. Main objective of the program was to promote clinical and scientific research to optimize the therapeutic strategies for patients with PSM. Core of the Program has been the integration of Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) with Hyperthermic Intra-Peritoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) in the clinical practice, and more than 800 procedures have been performed thus far. The INT is a international oncological referral center that is in a privileged position to conduct translational research. In accordance with this mission, our activity has evolved in a multidisciplinary environment, with the participation of clinicians, biologists, pathologists, and pharmacologists. Therefore all studies have had a biological and pharmacological features. Several clinical trials have enabled to standardize the treatment of different PSM and define the treatment guidelines for many of them. Special attention was dedicated to rare PSM as Pseudomyxoma Peritonei, Serous Papillary Peritoneal Carcinoma, and Peritoneal Mesothelioma. Regarding the latter, in particular, we have recently structured and coordinated the Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International (PSOGI) registry, gathering data on more than 1,000 patients. The output of our clinical and research activity has contributed to the evolution of the PSM field in the last two decades by means of several initiatives such as the Milan Consensus Conference in 2006. Moreover, we have also dedicated efforts to spread knowledge by means of PSM Theoretical Courses and coordination of European School of Peritoneal Surface Oncology (ESPSO) that is the last significant ESSO-PSOGI initiative.
